BA History Curriculum

The Bachelor of Arts in History (BA History) is one of the program offerings within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Mindanao State University – General Santos City campus. It is one of the first programs offered on the campus as per BOR Resolution No. 1612 during their 86th Meeting on September 20, 1978. Later, another revision was done during their 125th meeting on November 27, 1985, under Resolution No. 180, in which courses on Philippine studies were considered the new focus of the program and were further reinforced by a special concentration in Mindanao in both historical and contemporary studies.

Another curriculum revision was initiated in 1999 which is a long-term vision of internationalization. Subject courses on global and regional histories were taught to produce history graduates who were equipped with in-depth knowledge of the world and prepared for their future careers.

Presently, in response to the changes in the education curriculum, the program underwent again curriculum revision aligning it with the guidelines set forth by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the implementation of K-12 Curriculum before 2018. The MSU System Manual for Curriculum Revision and Development and Offering of New Curricular Programs describes the process/flow of the conduct of curriculum revision.

Despite that Mindanao State University is an autonomous university in the country because of its Charter (RA 1387), in offering its programs like the Bachelor of Arts in History (BA History), which follows the minimum requirements of the CHED (Commission on Higher Education). In the process of curriculum revision, the campuses involved follow the minimum guidelines provided by the CHED Memorandum No. 38, s. of 2017.

Starting from the Academic Year 2018 – 2019, the BA History program at MSU-GSC adopted a similar curriculum to that of MSU-IIT and MSU-Marawi. This curriculum was approved through the MSU System Board of Regents Meeting under BOR Resolution No. 257 on December 20, 2017.

To sum it up, the present curriculum of MSU-General Santos BA History program adheres to:

 a.      Minimum standards of CHED Memorandum No. 38, s. of 2017 for BA History’s Policies, Standards, and Guidelines (PSGs);

b.     Address the challenges posed by the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum;

c.      Relevant to the community's need for quality education; and

d.     Response to the Internationalization, i.e. to set equal footing with the rest of the ASEAN region.

Hence, there was the assurance of an outcomes-based structure, assuring the development of the graduates’ skills, competence, and expertise in their chosen field.
